Nothing completes the look of a sleek, new pickup truck than a quality tonneau cover. There are many different sizes and styles available today and this is just a small sample of what’s out there. For this list, I’ve chosen the soft, tri-fold models, as they are the most popular. Prices vary dramatically, as does the quality. One can easily spend well into four figures for a high end tonneau, but that doesn’t mean you have to. There are several quality built, but reasonably priced tonneaus available and I’ve narrowed the list down to five of the best available for under four hundred dollars. The items on this list were researched and chosen because they fit my own personal truck, the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali.
- Extang Trifecta 2.0
- Leer Latitude
- Gator Trio-Fold Pro
- Lund 950192 Genesis
- Bestop 1621701 EZFold
Extang Trifecta 2.0
The Extang Trifecta 2.0 is a sleak, low profile tonneau wrapped in a heavy duty, leather-grained textured vinyl. Constructed of lightweight aircraft aluminum, the frame attaches very easily to the bed rails by the use of their upgraded clamps, without the need for additional tools. The richly textured fabric definitely gives the appearance of a more expensive option, and therefore finds itself at the top of this list. Made here in the U.S.A., in Ann Arbor, Michigan and covered by Extang’s Maximum Strength Warranty.
Leer Latitude
LEER is the #1 manufacturer of fiberglass and aluminum truck caps and tonneaus in North America. Their Latitude tonneau cover includes their proprietary Cync latching system. Mounted near the tailgate, the latch allows the user to open up the cover from either side by simply pinching the mechanism with the thumb and forefinger. Rounded edges with double stitching keeps the durable vinyl securely attached to the frame. The latch plates do require an allen wrench (supplied) to mount them, however. Not a big deal, in my opinion. Leer Latitude tonneau covers all come with this limited lifetime warranty. Made in the U.S.A.
Gator Tri-fold Pro
The Gator Tri-fold Pro is an excellent option hovering around the three hundred dollar price point. Constructed from industrial strength vinyl fabric attached to a powder coated black aluminum frame, and stainless steal hinge pins, the Tri-Fold Pro is a definite competitor. This heavy duty offering is also rated to be one of the most leak proof, with its EPDM full length rubber seals. Gator claims the Tri-Fold Pro to be the toughest, soft tri-fold on the market, and carries a limited lifetime warranty. Made in the U.S.A.
Lund 950192 Genesis
The Lund 950192 Genesis is a terrific option that comes in well under the $400 price point, but shows how it isn’t necessary to spend four hundred, or even three hundred to get a decent tonneau. This cover offers a premium quality, marine grade, rip-stop vinyl cover with an embossed leather surface, secured to a powder-coated aircraft aluminum and high-impact polycarbonate frame with weather tight seals. Made in the U.S.A. and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. A great choice for right around $250 with free shipping.
Bestop 1621701 EZFold
The Bestop 1621701 EZFold tonneau cover is the last item on this list, but definitely not the least. Very popular with the Jeep community, Bestop tonneaus are a well known and well built option no matter what vehicle you drive. Their company info can be found here. The EZFold is designed for quick, one hand on/off by way of their heavy duty adjustable clamps. Durable, textured vinyl is stretch, shrink, as well as UV and mildew resistant. The tough aluminum frame and it’s integrated latching system, attaches with or without bed rails. Top has reinforced corners and integrated buckle straps for securing the tonneau when folded back. The Bestop EZFold and other soft tops are designed and manufactured in North America and covered by a limited lifetime warranty.
These are the five tonneau covers I’ve chosen to highlight in this post, but there are many, many other fine offerings available today. I chose these because of their high quality, accessible price point, and the fact that they were all made in the U.S.A. In future posts I will cover other items I have researched and/or purchased, and will give my honest assessment of each. Stay tuned!
